Is Yoga a Gateway to Demonic Spirits? A Biblical Warning
Yoga is often advertised today as a harmless form of exercise that helps with relaxation, breathing, and flexibility. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are flooded with videos of yoga poses and meditation routines. Influencers promote it as the secret to a peaceful mind and a healthy body. The wellness industry, worth billions of dollars, has made yoga a global trend, attracting millions across the world.
Even within some Christian circles, adaptations have been made. Things like “Christian yoga,” “Holy Yoga,” or yoga prayer classes have emerged. They claim to remove the Hindu or Buddhist elements and replace them with Bible verses or worship music. Yet, respected evangelical leaders warn that yoga is far more than stretching—it is a spiritual practice rooted in pagan worship.
As John MacArthur explains, “Yoga was designed as a spiritual discipline to unite with Brahman. Christians who adopt it risk blending idolatry with their faith.” Similarly, Albert Mohler reminds us that Christians who try to practice yoga must either “deny the reality of what yoga represents or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga.”
Short Historical Background of Yoga
Yoga is not just exercise—it is an ancient spiritual discipline that comes from Hinduism. The word “yoga” itself means “to yoke” or “to unite”—specifically, to unite the individual soul with Brahman, the Hindu concept of ultimate reality.
In Hindu scriptures, yoga is a pathway to achieving liberation (moksha)—a state where the soul escapes the cycle of death and rebirth and becomes one with the divine.
The postures (asanas) were developed to prepare the body for long hours of meditation and chanting to Hindu gods.
The breathing techniques (pranayama) are meant to control the life force and open the mind to altered states of consciousness.
Therefore, the physical movements are not neutral; they were created for spiritual worship in another religion. When Christians adopt yoga, even if unintentionally, they are opening themselves to a practice rooted in idolatry and pagan worship.
What Does the Bible Say About Yoga?
The Bible never mentions yoga by name, but it gives us clear teaching about involvement in pagan practices. Here are a few key verses:
Deuteronomy 12:30–31 – “Take care that you be not ensnared to follow them… You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way.”
God warned Israel not to copy the religious practices of the nations. Yoga, being worship to Hindu gods, falls under this warning.
2 Corinthians 6:14–15 – “What fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial?”
Believers cannot mix Christ with pagan spirituality. To do so is spiritual compromise.
Ephesians 5:11 – “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”
Instead of adopting yoga, Christians are called to expose it as spiritually dangerous.
1 Corinthians 10:21 – “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.”
Yoga may appear harmless, but its spiritual roots are demonic. Christians cannot mix it with worship of the Lord.
Each of these verses reminds us that the people of God are to remain holy and separate, not blending pagan practices with the worship of Christ.
Conclusion: The Danger of Yoga and the Power of Jesus
Yoga is not simply stretching—it is a spiritual system designed to draw people into union with false gods. When Christians practice yoga, even with good intentions, they risk stepping into dangerous spiritual territory. Many testimonies show that yoga can open doors to confusion, false peace, and even demonic influence.
But there is hope. Jesus Christ is greater than any pagan practice. He alone gives true peace, healing, and rest for our souls. As John 8:36 says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
If you have been involved in yoga or any pagan practice, you can turn to Jesus today. He has the power to forgive, cleanse, and free you from every spiritual entanglement.
Altar Call and Prayer
Friend, if you have realized today that yoga or other practices have led you away from Christ, now is the time to come back. Jesus loves you and wants to give you true freedom.
Pray this prayer with faith:
“Lord Jesus, I confess that I have opened doors to practices that do not honor You. I repent of every involvement with yoga and any other pagan activity. I ask You to cleanse me by Your blood and set me free from every demonic influence. I surrender my body, soul, and spirit to You alone. Be my Lord, my Savior, and my peace. From today, I choose to follow You fully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you prayed that prayer sincerely, Jesus has forgiven you and made you new. Walk in His freedom, study His Word, and keep away from every practice that does not glorify Him.
