The Hidden Dangers of Ouija Boards, Tarot Cards, Crystal Balls, Astrology, and Other Occult Practices

 

Humanity has always hungered for answers. Across cultures and centuries, people have sought to understand their future, connect with unseen forces, or control the spiritual realm. In our day, I have seen that hunger often being directed toward tools and practices that promise insight and power: Ouija boards, tarot cards, crystal balls, astrology, palm readings, ancestor worship, witchcraft, and New Age spirituality.

At first glance, these practices may appear harmless — nothing more than games, cultural traditions, or quirky hobbies. Yet Scripture pulls back the curtain and exposes them for what they really are: dangerous doorways into spiritual deception.

Today, more than ever, Christians like me and you need to recognize the subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways these occult practices infiltrate our lives. What seems like fun entertainment, a horoscope app, or a ritual passed down from family can actually become chains of bondage that pull people away from the true and living God.

Ouija Boards: A Dangerous Game

The Ouija board is often packaged as an innocent party activity. Friends gather around a wooden board with letters and numbers, place their fingers on a small planchette, and ask questions of the spirit world. The board “mysteriously” spells out answers. 

Many who play for the first time laugh it off as a psychological trick — the subconscious moving the pointer. But testimonies abound of participants experiencing terrifying consequences: objects moving on their own, eerie voices, nightmares, or even feelings of possession.

The Old Testament explicitly warns against necromancy and communicating with the dead in several passages.

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NIV)

 “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.”

Friend, if you’re reading this and have ever touched, thought about touching, or even joked with a Ouija board, take this seriously: it is not a toy. It’s an open invitation for demonic spirits to enter your life or the lives of your loved ones—and the consequences can be far-reaching.”

Tarot Cards: The Counterfeit of God’s Revelation

Tarot cards promise guidance. Each card — The Fool, The Magician, The Tower, The Lovers — supposedly carries symbolic meaning to reveal the seeker’s past, present, or future.

Yet tarot cards are nothing more than a counterfeit. They mimic what God alone offers: wisdom, revelation, and direction. Isaiah 8:19 warns, “Should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” When people turn to tarot cards, they are bypassing God and leaning on deceptive spiritual powers.

A Christian does not need a deck of cards to discern God’s will. The Lord provides His Word, His Spirit, and His people as safe, holy, and trustworthy guides.

Crystal Balls: The Lure of Hidden Knowledge

The image of a fortune teller gazing into a glowing crystal ball is familiar from films and fairgrounds. Behind this image lies a darker reality: the desire to control the future through forbidden knowledge.

God’s Word is clear: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever” (Deuteronomy 29:29). Seeking knowledge through crystal balls or clairvoyance is a rejection of trust in God’s sovereignty.

In truth, many practitioners admit that crystal balls are not just props. They are often “charged” with rituals, making them spiritual channels. This makes them spiritually dangerous objects rather than harmless ornaments.

Astrology: Stars Cannot Save You

Astrology is one of the oldest and most widespread forms of divination. From daily horoscopes to full natal charts, astrology claims that the alignment of planets and stars determines human personality and destiny.

People often say, “It’s just for fun” — yet many make serious life decisions based on zodiac signs. Some avoid relationships because their “signs are incompatible,” while others pursue careers or make investments according to planetary movements.

But God rebukes this false system: “Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month… Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up” (Isaiah 47:13-14). The heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1), not the destiny of man. To trust the stars instead of their Creator is idolatry.

Palm Reading and Numerology: Deceptive Pathways

Closely tied to astrology are palm reading and numerology. Palm readers claim to decode a person’s life by studying lines on their hands. Numerologists assign mystical meaning to numbers in a person’s name or birthday.

Though often dismissed as carnival gimmicks, these practices feed the same lie: that hidden forces, not God, determine your destiny. The Lord alone has numbered our days (Psalm 139:16). Palmistry and numerology are deceptive attempts to grasp control apart from Him.

Ancestor Worship and Spirit Mediums

In many cultures, ancestor veneration is considered a sign of respect. Families may offer prayers, sacrifices, or rituals to honor the dead or to seek their guidance.

Yet Scripture makes a sharp distinction between honoring our parents and communicating with the dead. “There shall not be found among you anyone who… practices divination, or tells fortunes, or interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or a medium, or a necromancer, or one who inquires of the dead” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).

When people pray to ancestors, they are not reaching their loved ones. They are opening themselves to demonic impersonation. Satan delights to mimic and deceive. God calls His children to worship Him alone, not the spirits of the departed.

Witchcraft and New Age Spirituality

Modern witchcraft (often glamorized in books, movies, and TikTok trends) claims to be empowering, especially for women. Practices like spell casting, energy manipulation, and the use of charms are advertised as tools for healing or justice.

Similarly, the New Age movement promotes “positive energy,” meditation, crystals for healing, and channeling spiritual guides. These practices may appear therapeutic, but they rely on powers that are not from God.

Galatians 5:19-20 lists “sorcery” (Greek: pharmakeia) among the works of the flesh. The early church understood sorcery as a doorway to demonic influence. New Age practices dress sorcery in modern clothing, but the power source remains the same.

Why These Practices Are Spiritually Dangerous

Though each practice looks different, they share a common DNA: they seek power, knowledge, or control outside of God. This rebellion is as old as Eden, where the serpent tempted Eve with the promise, “You will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).

Every occult practice — whether it’s casting a horoscope, lighting a candle for the dead, or playing with a Ouija board — taps into this same lie. They promise insight or empowerment, but the result is deception, bondage, and separation from God.

The Apostle Paul warns, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). To dabble in occult practices is to step onto the enemy’s battlefield unprotected.

The True Source of Wisdom, Power, and Peace

Christians need not seek horoscopes or spirits for guidance. God has already promised wisdom to all who ask: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault” (James 1:5).

Unlike the vague and contradictory messages of occult practices, God’s Word is living, active, and trustworthy. The Holy Spirit guides believers into truth (John 16:13). Jesus Christ offers peace that no crystal, card, or ritual can provide: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives” (John 14:27).

Freedom for Those Who Have Dabbled

Perhaps you have tried one of these practices — out of curiosity, peer pressure, or cultural tradition. You may even feel trapped by fear or guilt. But the good news is this: there is freedom in Christ.

Acts 19:19 records that when the gospel came to Ephesus, believers publicly burned their sorcery scrolls, renouncing their old ways. They exchanged counterfeit power for the true power of God.

You can do the same today. Confess your involvement, renounce it in the name of Jesus, and ask Him to cleanse you. He promises: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Conclusion: Choose Light, Not Darkness

Ouija boards, tarot cards, crystal balls, astrology, palm reading, ancestor worship, witchcraft, and New Age spirituality may look harmless on the surface. But beneath their glitter lies darkness. They cannot reveal your destiny, heal your wounds, or bring you peace. At best, they deceive. At worst, they enslave.

Only Jesus Christ offers life, hope, and freedom. Only His Word provides reliable guidance. Only His Spirit brings lasting peace.

As followers of Christ, we must not flirt with darkness. We are called to shine as lights in a world fascinated by the counterfeit. Let us close the door to every occult practice and open our hearts fully to the Lord, who is our refuge, our strength, and our only source of truth.

“What fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
